In 1967, the NHL introduced six additional teams to the league. Since then, United States-born hockey players have gained a 25% share of the league (the year before it was close to 1%). Was this “spike” related to the fact that the Sabres, Flyers, Golden Seals, Kings, North Stars and the St. Louis Blues were all expansion teams based in the continental United States followed by over a dozen more since? Probably, but if you think about it, that nominal gain over the course of 50 years is somewhat laughable considering the vast majority of the league’s games are played on U.S. soil. It looks like the game will continue to be dominated by the Great White North.
